What's the difference between
rugby and American football?
I have been watching American football highlights for almost 3 weeks. Why? Who knows why. I have never been interested in playing the sport and I never watch any games on the TV. I was raised to play soccer (football for the majority of the world) ; I later played baseball, basketball, and tennis. I just started to watch football on YouTube and it caught my interested. Then later I started to watch rugby games; which I ended up liking more than football but it did pop the question "whats the difference between rugby and American football."
First we have to start by describing what these two sports are.
What is American football? A game is 60 mins long divided into two halves of 30 minutes. It is a team sport with two teams of eleven players. Each team has a offensive and defenses team. They both play in a rectangle field with goal post in each side and use a Orval ball to throw or run with to score. You can also pass the ball while in play. They have 4 plays allowed and must pass ten yards to earn another 4 plays. The defensive team must try to stop the from scoring and end the offensive team plays. The offense must run to the goal line to score points. The defensive team can stop them from scare by tackling the player with the ball or intercepting the ball; also possibly scoring. Once one side of the teams plays are done, they will turn over to the defensive team. Whichever side advances they will eventually score. You can score by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone for a touchdown or kicking the ball through the opponent's goalposts for a field goal. The team with the most points at the end of a game wins.
What is rugby?
The match is 80 minutes long and split into 40 minutes. There are 15 players per team. The field is 110 yards long and 70 meters wide and played with a oval shaped ball. Almost similar to the ball used in American football. The game starts with a kick-off where the defensive time kick towards the opposite team. The offensive team must catch it and run with the ball while the defensive team try to stop you. The ball is placed in the middle and a scrums is started. Each side of the team place there hands on there shoulders while pushing against the opponents and try to move the ball and be able to run the ball. If the ball falls off to the side. A line up is preformed and a team must throw it in the middle to start the game. Once the one side has the ball the player must place the ball on the try line. A player can score by running with the ball. The player must not get tackled by the defensive team. It is allowed to passed ball only if the other player is next or behind you. You can also kick the all to the goal post but it is hard to do. You must let go of the ball once dropped. If you score you can also try to add more point by kicking the ball at the goal posts for 3 more points. The team with the most points wins.
Now we find out what are the differences!
Even though both are very similar in playing styles. These two sports have many differences. The most visual difference is that American football teams wear protective head and body gear to help reduce any damages from tackles. In rugby the only gear used is some head pads and maybe some ankle and elbow support. Rugby is shorter than American football. Rugby has scrums compare to American football that have a open way of tackling and a snap were the quarter back catches the ball. American football starts the game with a kick off, while rugby is started off with placing the ball in the middle. Rugby also have line ups and while with American football if the ball falls to the side and new game is started. There are many more differences in these two sports but I will stop here for our sake.
In my search of my answer. I notice that both sports are very different but seem very familiar by play styles. There culture and fan base was also very different but at the end they are both sports are great and have there own pros and cons. I still prefer rugby over football though.

I had no idea that rugby was a sport, it’s crazy that a high contact sport has barely any padding.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who lives in the U.K. and she plays rugby on a girls team! She says the best part is bashing in to people!!! :OD
